  • Various kinds of test prep, which work and why
  • Commercial test prep
  • Signs of good vs bad test prep
  • Just how to inspire a teenager
  • What the faculty Board is testing
  • The time that is best to tour colleges

How Much Does the SAT Count in the Admissions Decision?

Therefore how much does the SAT Count in the Admissions choice?

SAT counts for lots more than colleges will acknowledge to and less than students think.

The Academic Index the AI Calculator should shed light on ‘how much’ the SAT counts. Although AI originated for athletes, they determine it for all students.

Don’t miss these Kitchen Table Math remarks, which add more insight, including one commenter whom found a (slightly old) College Board report that gives a wide range of details on the decision techniques utilized by many universities.

The part that is first based on your SAT scores, the next component is according to your SAT II scores, additionally the third component is dependant on your GPA. The link above talks about a GPA dining table supplied to the eight universities, but it generally does not explain the way the GPA is calculated. It generally seems to use a weighted scale where the most effective score is 4.3. I haven’t learned exactly how this true number is calculated. The spreadsheet then proceeds to decide on the higher rating related to each of the two GPA figures. It’s always struck me that the SAT scores make up two-thirds with this index. Colleges might add a fudge factor if they know something about a school that is high but no option for that shows up into the example spreadsheet.

Quadruplets’ Mom Needs SAT Advice

Dear Ms. Stier:

I recently found your web site and I love it! Thanks for carrying it out.

We could really use some advise on how best to approach SAT test prep for my quadruplets. [me: OMG]

I have 3 girls and 1 kid. They took the PSAT in sophomore and they will take the PSAT again this October year.

Certainly one of the drawbacks of getting all my children the same age is that any mistakes I make affects all four. None of them benefit so I hope to get this as right as I can from me learning from my mistakes.

Do you would imagine I should have them study as a small group together under my guidance (from experience it is like trying to herd cats); get a tutor for the four of these in a small group; have someone tutor them separately; or deliver them up to a SAT test prep center? Or even a combination of all of these? I need to watch my costs too.

How do you find a tutor that is good? What is the most readily useful test prep business?

If these are questions you can help me with i’d appreciate it. Then that’s okay and I appreciate you taking your time to read my email if it is not something that you can help me.

Thanks again for the web site info

Multiple Mom

Dear Multiple Mom,

My gut says to do some work together with all four (e.g. lots of vocab, full practice tests, and they can explain answers to each other because that is a great way to learn), and do some preparation separately. If you’re able to find a tutor( that is affordable), that’s the most effective means.

Here are a few pre-determined questions to ask a potential tutor (or test prep company):

1) Do you customize your approach and, if so, exactly how?

2) exactly What’s your score that is average gain student? Many tutors will not respond to this question because there are incredibly numerous variables that it’s very nearly maybe not fair to inquire of. Having said that, an excessive ‘average score gain’ should be a banner. e.g., 200 points in 30 days.

3) just how long do you advise students”> to prepare for the SAT and how much can it cost? The answer that is right be specific and will be based on where the pupil begins and what the goal is.

4) What test prep materials do you use? ( If it’s not formal College Board material, be wary.)

5) how homework that is much there be between sessions? (a tutor that is great have students do as much act as possible off the clock, such as vocab and practice tests.)

The step that is first to own all four kids take an official university Board practice SAT. You need to use one through the College Board’s Blue Book, or the College Board has a training test on its website.

You’ll want to determine just what they have to work on and whether they need foundational work or more test prep polish that is traditional. My guess is as I did!) that they need foundational work, as most kids do (and. Be sure you choose a test or tutor prep company who is able to assess that well!

Regarding test prep companies, we’d steer clear of anyone who doesn’t primarily use university Board material (that would include most/if not all large, brand-name test prep companies).
